Spaniard outlasts Fred Couples and Ernie Els to win Champions Tour’s Mitsubishi Electric Championship in Hawaii
3: Score, a birdie, that Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez made on the second playoff hole to win the Champions Tour’s season-opening Mitsubushi Electric Championship on Sunday in Hawaii. Jimenez, American Fred Couples and South Africa’s Ernie Els had tied at 14-under 202 through 54 holes at Hualalai Golf Course in Kailua-Kona. In the first extra trip to the par-4 18th hole, Jimenez and Els, making his Champions Tour debut, advanced with pars as Couples exited with a bogey. Jimenez, 56, posted his ninth title on the senior tour, with at least one victory in each of the past eight seasons since he joined the tour upon turning 50 in 2014. He won 21 times on his home European Tour (scores).
