2-time Hope winner Phil Mickelson begins new role

Mickelson will serve as tournament host for PGA Tour’s The American Express, which starts Thursday in California desert

2: Number of times that American Phil Mickelson has won the PGA Tour’s annual stop in the California Desert. Mickelson, 49, whose 44 PGA Tour victories rank ninth all-time and include the 2002 and 2004 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic titles, will serve as tournament host for The American Express, which begins Thursday in La Quinta, Calif. The PGA West Stadium Course will be the main venue, but play also will be held early at PGA West’s Nicklaus Tournament and La Quinta Country Club (tee times).
