Aussie edges American Brendan Steele for 2nd PGA Tour victory
1: Number of playoff holes that Australia’s Cameron Smith needed to defeat American Brendan Steele and win the PGA Tour’s Sony Open in Hawaii on Sunday. Smith parred the par-4 10th hole at soggy Waialae Country Club in Honolulu to clip Steele after they had tied at 11-under 269. Smith, who was paired with Steele in the final group, sank an 8½-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th hole to shoot 2-under 68 and force a playoff. Steele, who led by three strokes after 54 holes, bogeyed two of his final six holes and closed with a 71. It is the second victory on the PGA Tour for Smith, 26, but his first individual stroke-play victory, after he teamed with Jonas Blixt to win the 2017 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Smith improves to 3-0 in worldwide playoffs, including the victory in New Orleans and the 2017 Australian PGA title (scores).
