Gary Player’s 13 titles set standard for South African Open

Black Knight won his national championship in 4 decades en route to a World Golf Hall of Fame career

13: Record number of times that Gary Player won the South African Open, with his titles spanning the years 1956-81. The late Bobby Locke, a nine-time winner, is the next-closest multi-winner of the open. Player, 84, a World Golf Hall of Fame member, won 165 titles around the world, including 24 times on the PGA Tour, of which nine were major championships. The South African Open begins Thursday at Randpark Golf Club in Johannesburg. The tournament dates to 1893 and is the second-oldest national championship in golf, behind only the British Open, which began in 1860. The South African Open became part of the European Tour in 1997.
