Closing birdie clips Patrick Reed after Xander Schauffele had been eliminated earlier in a 3-man playoff at the winners-only event
3: Number of playoff holes that Justin Thomas needed to win the PGA Tour’s Sentry Tournament of Champions late Sunday at Kapalua (Hawaii) Resort. With the sun setting across Maui island, Thomas sank a 3-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th hole at the Plantation Course to defeat Patrick Reed. They had tied with fellow American Xander Schauffele at 14-under 278 through 72 holes. Schauffele was eliminated with par on the first extra trip at the 18th as Thomas and Reed matched birdies. Thomas and Reed settled for pars on the second extra trip to the seaside 18th before Thomas’ heroics on the third playoff hole. The victory, the 12th for Thomas, 26, on the PGA Tour, is his second of the 2019-20 wraparound season and his second at the winners-only T of C in the past four years. He appeared to have had the title in hand on the 72nd hole before he yanked a fairway wood into the penalty area left of the green and made bogey to allow playing competitor Schauffele, the defending champion, to pull even and force the three-man playoff (scores) .
