Schauffele-Thomas pairing tops PGA Tour’s 2020 opener

Winners-only event features 34 champions from past year on Kapalua Resort’s renovated Coore-Crenshaw design

34: Number of players entered at the PGA Tour’s winners-only Sentry Tournament of Champions, which begins Thursday at Kapalua (Hawaii) Resort’s Plantation Course. Defending champion Xander Schauffele is paired with fellow American Justin Thomas, the 2017 TOC winner, in the last twosome, at 12:40 p.m. local time (5:40 p.m. EST). Schauffele and Thomas are two of the eight Americans from the victorious Presidents Cup team who are entered. Tiger Woods, the player/captain who led the U.S. to victory in the biennial matches against the Internationals, opted not to play, as did Phil Mickelson and No. 1-ranked Brooks Koepka, who has an injured left knee. The Plantation Course, on the northwest tip of Maui island, reopened recently after extensive renovations by original designers Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. Golf Channel will televise the tournament live daily beginning at 6 p.m. EST (tee times).
