McIlroy wins WGC HSBC Champions in playoff

Northern Irishman outlasts Xander Schauffele for 2nd PGA Tour title in Asia

2: Number of career victories in Asia for Rory McIlroy, who won the WGC HSBC Champions in Shanghai. McIlroy, 30, of Northern Ireland, birdied the first playoff hole, the par-5 18th, to defeat American Xander Schauffele at Sheshan International Golf Club. They had tied at 19-under 269 when Schauffele closed with a 6-under 66 to tie McIlroy, the 54-hole leader who finished with a 68. It was the 18th PGA Tour victory for McIlroy, a four-time major champion. McIlroy, the PGA Tour’s 2018-19 player of the year, has won four of his last 15 starts on the Tour. His other victory in Asia came in 2011 at the European Tour’s UBS Hong Kong Open. He moved to No. 2 in the FedEx Cup standings, behind Lanto Griffin (scores).

3: Number of players on the LPGA who successfully defended titles this year as American Nelly Korda won the Taiwan Swinging Skirts LPGA in New Taipei City. Korda, who shot a final-round 72, tied Australia’s Minjee Lee (69) and Germany’s Caroline Masson (68) at 18-under 270 after 72 holes at Miramar Golf Country Club. Korda won the title with a birdie on the first playoff hole, the par-5 18th. It was the third career title for Korda, 21, whose older sister, Jessica, has won five times on the women’s tour. Nelly Korda joined Brooke Henderson (Lotte Championship) and Danielle Kang (Buick LPGA Shanghai) in successfully defending titles this season (scores).

7: Number of career victories on the Champions Tour for Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie, who won the Invesco QQQ Championship in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Montgomerie made par on the first playoff hole to outlast Germany’s Bernhard Langer after they had tied at 14-under 202 after 54 holes at Sherwood Country Club. It was the second of three playoff events on the 50-and-older tour. Montgomerie, 56, birdied two of the last three holes to cap a bogey-free 9-under 63 to tie Langer, who shot 67. The top 36 in the season standings advanced to the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on Nov. 7-10 at Phoenix Country Club (scores).

21: Number of strokes under par that China’s Muni He finished to win the eight-round LPGA Qualifying Tournament Q-Series in Pinehurst, N.C. He, 20, shot a final-round 2-under 70 at Pinehurst Resort’s No. 9 course to cruise to a three-stroke victory. As an LPGA rookie in 2019, He made eight of 19 cuts, prompting her appearance at Q-Series. The top 45 earned status for the 2020 season (scores).

62: Score in the final round for American Brendon Todd, who rallied to win the PGA Tour’s inaugural Bermuda Championship in Southampton, Bermuda. Todd, 34, closed with a 9-under round to finish 72 holes at 24 under at Port Royal Golf Course. Todd started the day two strokes behind Harry Higgs, who shot 68 and finished second at 20-under 264. It was Todd’s second career victory (scores).
