Thomas leads field at Sony Open in Hawaii; live coverage airing in primetime Thursday-Sunday on Golf Channel

Oosthuizen defends on European Tour at South African Open

ORLANDO, Fla. (Jan. 7, 2020) – The PGA TOUR stages the Sony Open in Hawaii this week, where Matt Kuchar will defend his 2019 title alongside Justin Thomas and Patrick Reed. Live coverage will air in primetime, Thursday-Sunday on GOLF Channel. On the European Tour, Louis Oosthuizen will defend in his home country at the South African Open, airing Thursday-Sunday live on GOLF Channel. The tournament also marks the second of 12 Open Qualifying Series events, with the top-three finishers this week inside the top-10 (not previously qualified) earning an invitation to The 2020 Open in July. Tony Finau and Shane Lowry lead the field at the Hong Kong Open, with live coverage airing Wednesday-Saturday night. The Korn Ferry TOUR kicks off its 2020 season at the Bahamas Great Exuma Classic, airing Sunday-Wednesday afternoon live on GOLF Channel.

First full-field event of 2020: This week marks the first full-field event of 2020 on the PGA TOUR. 15 of the previous 21 winners at the Sony Open – including each of the past six – competed at Kapalua in the Tournament of Champions the week prior. 23 of 34 players in the field last week in Maui are scheduled to compete in Honolulu this week.
Kuchar defends: Matt Kuchar finished four shots ahead of Andrew Putnam to claim his ninth PGA TOUR win.

“Featured Group” coverage to highlight opening two rounds: GOLF Channel’s live tournament coverage of the Bahamas Great Exuma Classic will highlight a “Featured Group” during the first two rounds on Sunday-Monday. The three players in the featured group will be mic’d up for their round. Tuesday’s third round coverage will utilize a featured hole, in addition to cameras tracking those near the top of the leaderboard, while Wednesday’s final round will employ a traditional live tournament production approach.
