Phil Mickelson commits to 2020 Farmers Insurance Open

Three-time Farmers Insurance Open champion and San Diego native set to tee off at Torrey Pines

SAN DIEGO – San Diego native and five-time major championship winner Phil Mickelson has committed to play the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open, scheduled for January 22-26, 2020 at Torrey Pines Golf Course.

Mickelson has won 44 times on the PGA TOUR throughout his spectacular three-decade professional career, and is a three-time winner of the Farmers Insurance Open (1993, 2000 and 2001). The 1993 victory at Torrey Pines was his first as a professional.

The World Golf Hall of Famer did not play the Farmers Insurance Open last season, ending a streak of 28 straight years entering the event. In addition to his three victories in the tournament, he has registered seven other top-10 finishes at Torrey Pines.

“We’re thrilled to have Phil return to the Farmers Insurance Open this year,” said Century Club of San Diego CEO Marty Gorsich. “Phil has such a strong connection to San Diego and the people here, and has provided so many memorable moments over the years in his hometown tournament at Torrey Pines. It will be exciting to see him competing alongside many of the game’s other top players January 22-26.”

Mickelson joins a group of early commitments that includes World No. 9, San Diego native and 2016-17 PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year Xander Schauffele; World No. 17 and 2019 U.S. Open winner Gary Woodland; two-time Masters champion and 2011 Farmers Insurance Open winner Bubba Watson; two-time Farmers Insurance Open winner Brandt Snedeker and 18 of the top 30 players in the 2019-20 FedExCup points standings.

Players competing in this week’s Presidents Cup matches who have committed include Schauffele and Woodland from the U.S. Team and five players from the International squad – Hideki Matsuyama (Japan), C.T. Pan (Chinese Taipei), Joaquin Niemann (Chile), Sungjae Im (Korea) and Byeong Hun An(Korea).

The field is not final until the commitment deadline on Friday, Jan. 17 at the conclusion of play in that week’s tournament.

Tickets for the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open are now on sale and can be purchased at Adult grounds tickets start at $50, with upgraded VIP tickets starting at $90. With venues selling out last year and prices increasing on January 13th, fans are encouraged to buy in advance. Discounted tickets are available for seniors, veterans, and youth 13-17. Grounds tickets are complimentary for active duty military, reservists, retired military and their dependents. Kids 12 and under are admitted free with a ticketed adult, with a maximum of four kids per adult.

In addition to attracting some of the biggest names in the sport, the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open will also feature an array of specialty food and drink offerings showcasing San Diego flavor and venues to entertain the 100,000-plus spectators who attend the four-day tournament.

Areas open to the public include the Grey Goose 19th Hole, which will feature an elevated viewing deck that provides panoramic views of the course and specialty drinks including the signature cocktail, the “Torrey Breeze.” Other public areas of interest include Funner at 15 where, fans can enjoy specialty food offerings, happy hour specials starting at 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and a DJ as part of the Post Party presented by Harrah’s Resort SoCal. Fans can also enjoy ocean and golf views while sitting at picnic tables in the Michelob ULTRA Zone.

The Farmers Insurance Open will be played January 23-26, 2020 at historic Torrey Pines Golf Course, host site of the 2008 and 2021 U.S. Opens, and the tournament consistently attracts a world-class field. This is the 68th year that a PGA TOUR event has been held in San Diego, beginning with the San Diego Open in 1952. The 2020 tournament also marks the 53rd time the event is being held at Torrey Pines Golf Course, and the 11th year of Farmers Insurance sponsorship of the tournament.
