Encanto Golf Course to reopen from overseed with completely revitalized bunkers

City of Phoenix golf property to reveal bunker upgrades as course reopens to public on Saturday

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (October 23, 2019) — Casa Verde Golf, in partnership with the City of Phoenix, has undertaken a systematic process of improving all sand bunkers throughout the property beginning September 9, 2019. Over the span of approximately seven weeks, the Scottsdale-based Casa Verde Golf has extracted all contaminated sand, reshaped bunker floors and faces, installed drainage, then completed the process by placing new bunker sand throughout.

“We’ve had the privilege of working on a number of City of Phoenix golf courses including Aguila, Cave Creek and now Encanto,” said Jeff Schwinkendorf, Vice President of Casa Verde Golf, a wholly owned subsidiary of OB Sports Golf Management, a division of Troon. “When you consider the history of these older courses, it’s really an honor to help breathe new life into them.”

Designed by prolific golf course architect William P. Bell, and built in 1935, Encanto is located in the core of Phoenix’s historic district. Boasting wide fairways and spectacular views of downtown Phoenix, it is also known as the third oldest golf course in the entire state of Arizona. Regrettably, Encanto has long suffered from a number of adverse circumstances creating less than favorable playing conditions throughout the bunkers. Bunker faces and edges have degraded over time, drainage was non-existent, and the sand had become overwhelmingly contaminated. Casa Verde Golf was selected to spearhead the improvements directed at mitigating the condition of the bunkers and restoring them to desirable playable conditions.

“While we were working on site, golfers would actually approach us and tell us how happy they were that we were improving the bunkers,” said Steve Young, Casa Verde Golf Project Manager. “Everyone has been so positive, despite the minor inconvenience of the construction.”

Following overseeding, with Encanto scheduled to reopen its doors and fairways on Saturday, October 26, the public will be treated to enhanced bunkers as well as lush green turf. Also worth noting is the newly renovated clubhouse restaurant, “The Encanto Tavern,” serving up fresh local favorites such as the “Sonoran Dog” and the “Poblano & Gouda Grilled Cheese Sandwich.”
“The Bunker work that Casa Verde Golf has recently completed at Encanto Golf Course is definitely going to add to the golfing experience at this City of Phoenix course,” said Ron Lopez, Encanto Golf Course Superintendent. “The long overdue project will be appreciated by the members as well as all players.”
