World No. 1 Dustin Johnson and defending T of C champion Justin Thomas anchor 42-man field for PGA Tour’s 1st event of new year
Johnson, the reigning FedEx Cup and Masters champion, will begin the new year in the same spot as he ended the old one: at No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking. His playing competitor, Thomas, is No. 3 in the world and the defending T of C champion. Both are two-time winners at the annual new-year’s opener at Kapalua Resort’s Plantation Course on Hawaii’s Maui island.
Just ahead of the Johnson-Thomas pairing at 12:30 p.m. local time (5:30 p.m. EST), No. 2-ranked Jon Rahm of Spain will be paired with No. 6 Xander Schauffele of the U.S. at 12:20 p.m. local time.
The winner of the 42-man, no-cut event will earn $1.34 million from the $6.7 million purse. The Tournament of Champions, usually a winner's-only event for champions from the previous calendar year, will include qualifiers from the 2020 Tour Championship because the PGA Tour lost 10 events last year because of COVID-19.
