U.K.-based governing body points toward Walker Cup and Curtis Cup matches by returning to a full lineup of tournaments
Released: By the R&A, a revised 2021 amateur schedule featuring the men’s Walker Cup and women’s Curtis Cup matches plus the return of tournaments that were canceled last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization announced Thursday in a news release. The Walker Cup, which pits the top American male amateurs against their counterparts from Great Britain and Ireland, will be played May 8-9 at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Fla. The Women’s British Amateur will be played June 7-12 at Kilmarnock’s Barassie Course in Scotland, followed one week later by the British Amateur men’s tournament at Nairn and Nairn Dunbar in Scotland. The Curtis Cup matches, which will pit the top female amateurs from the U.S. against those from Great Britain and Ireland, will be held Aug. 26-28 at Conwy (Wales) Golf Club. “We are hopeful that we will be able to stage these events as planned, but we recognize that the situation with the COVID-19 pandemic still remains uncertain and will adapt our plans in line with the guidance provided by governments and our medical advisers,” said Phil Anderton, the R&A’s chief development officer. The R&A, based in St. Andrews, Scotland, canceled all but three of its 2020 tournaments – Women’s British Open, Women’s British Amateur and the men’s British Amateur – because of the effects of COVID-19.
