2020 Houston Open: A look at the field

Memorial Park, a Tom Doak-redesigned muni, returns to the spotlight as the PGA Tour visits for the first time since 1963

It’s been more than a half-century since Memorial Park, the municipal course just west of downtown Houston, played host to the PGA Tour. This week, the city and the Tour will prepare to write a new chapter at a place with plenty of history.

The Houston Open, a longtime warmup act for the Masters, once again will precede the Augusta National dates, though in the fall and not the spring. The Houston Open, which was bumped to the fall in the Tour’s new schedule, shifted from October to November in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. When the Masters moved from its traditional April slot to Nov. 12-15, Houston regained its warmup slot.

Dustin Johnson, the No. 1-ranked player in the world and the reigning FedEx Cup champion, headlines the field this week. Johnson, who has not competed since he tied for sixth in the U.S. Open on Sept. 20, returns after a recent positive test for COVID-19. Brooks Koepka, who helped architect Tom Doak redesign Memorial Park, also was entered, as were Tyrrell Hatton and Phil Mickelson. Lanto Griffin is the defending champion.

Memorial Park dates to 1912, when the nine-holer with sand greens served as a recreational outlet for convalescing soldiers at the adjacent Camp Logan. In 1935, John Bredemus, the architect who built Colonial in Fort Worth, designed Memorial Park's 18-hole layout. That course hosted the PGA Tour in 1947 and 1951-63.

When the Tour last visited Memorial Park, Bob Charles became the first left-hander to win on the PGA Tour. Charles, of New Zealand, went on to win the British Open that summer, becoming the first left-hander to win a major championship. That bit of trivia might motivate Mickelson this week.
