2020 BMW Championship: Webb Simpson withdraws, citing need to rest

After having played 4 consecutive weeks, Simpson pulls out of 2nd FedEx Cup playoff event ‘to be rested’ for Tour Championship

Withdrew: Webb Simpson, from this week’s BMW Championship, claiming a desire “to be rested” for next week’s Tour Championship, the PGA Tour announced Tuesday afternoon. Simpson, who ranks No. 3 in the FedEx Cup standings, has played in four consecutive weeks and was coming off of a T-6 performance at the Northern Trust. One week earlier, he tied for third at the Wyndham Championship. Simpson is guaranteed a spot in the 30-man season finale next week at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. He has played in eight of 11 tournaments since the PGA Tour restarted its season in early June after a three-month suspension because of the global coronavirus pandemic. Simpson won the RBC Heritage, the second event in the revised schedule. Simpson's withdrawal trims the BMW Championship field to 69 players. Play begins Thursday at Olympia Fields (Ill.) Country Club's North Course.
