England’s Sam Horsfield, a 2-time winner on the U.K. Swing this summer, leads exemptees into next month’s Open at Winged Foot
Announced: By the USGA, 10 more exemptions for the U.S. Open next month at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., the association said Monday in a news release. The USGA invited the top 10 players through five events of the European Tour’s current U.K. Swing Order of Merit, led by England’s Sam Horsfield, who has won two of the five U.K. Swing titles. The other exemptions: No. 2 Thomas Detry (Belgium), No. 3 Andy Sullivan (England), No. 4 Rasmus Hojgaard (Denmark), No. 5 Renato Paratore (Italy), No. 6 Romain Langasque (France), No. 7 Sami Valimaki (Finland), No. 8 Adrian Otaegui (Spain), No. 9 Connor Syme (Scotland) and No. 10 Justin Harding (South Africa). The 144-player field will be entirely exempt because of the USGA’s cancellation of all qualifying due to the effects of the global coronavirus pandemic. In the coming weeks, five Open exemptions will be awarded from the three-tournament Korn Ferry Tour Series and five from the 2019-20 FedEx Cup points list to players not already exempt. The 120th U.S. Open will be played Sept. 17-20.
