Vartan Kupelian, 73, wrote about golf for decades in Detroit

Kupelian contributed occasionally to Morning Read after his 38-year career at The Detroit News

Died: Vartan Kupelian, a longtime golf writer in Detroit and an occasional contributor to Morning Read, on Thursday. He was 73 and had suffered from heart and diabetes complications in recent years. Kupelian, who was born in Germany, moved to Michigan as a boy. He spent 38 years with The Detroit News, primarily as the Red Wings’ beat writer and covering golf. According to his obituary in the News, Kupelian covered 168 major championships spanning the major professional golf tours. He was a former president of the Golf Writers Association of America. After retiring from the News in 2009, he wrote for PGATour.com and Masters.com.
