Tiger Woods commits to BMW, wants to play 3 in a row

Woods, who is competing at this week’s Northern Trust, will play back-to-back events in a bid to qualify for the Tour Championship

Announced: By Tiger Woods, that he will play next week’s BMW Championship as he attempts to qualify for the season-ending Tour Championship. The tournament was added to the schedule on his website. Woods is competing in the FedEx Cup playoff opener, the Northern Trust, which begins Thursday at TPC Boston in Norton, Mass. (tee times). The BMW, the second of three consecutive playoff events, will be played Aug. 27-30 at Olympia Fields (Ill.) Country Club and takes only the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings after this week’s play. Only the top 30 will advance to the Tour Championship, on Sept. 4-7 at Atlanta's East Lake Golf Club. Woods ranks 49th. Woods, 44, is tied with the late Sam Snead for the PGA Tour’s all-time victory lead, with 82. Woods won the FedEx Cup in 2007, the series’ debut year, and in 2009. This week will represent only his sixth start of the PGA Tour season. He last played two weeks ago in the PGA Championship, in which he tied for 37th. Woods won the 2018 Tour Championship for his first triumph in five years. The victory propelled him to the 2019 Masters title, his fifth green jacket, and then to his most recent victory, in October at the inaugural Zozo Championship in Japan.
