USGA expands exemptions for amateur events

With qualifying canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, USGA will lean on world amateur rankings to fill smaller fields for U.S. Amateur and U.S. Women’s Amateur this summer

Expanded: By the USGA, its exemption categories for the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Women’s Amateur tournaments to be played this summer. The USGA will expand the use of the World Amateur Golf Ranking and the Women’s World Amateur Golf Ranking for the respective events. The men’s amateur will be played Aug. 10-16 at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore., and the women’s amateur will be played Aug. 3-9 at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the USGA canceled all qualifying for the events. To comply with health and safety guidelines, the USGA reduced the size of each field: 264 instead of the usual 312 for the men, and 132 instead of the usual 156 for the women. Details on the exemptions can be found at usga.org. More information regarding testing protocols, travel guidance and other logistics will be made available when entries open June 26.
