Honor recognizes the graduating senior with the academics, citizenship and golf accomplishments that reflect the spirit of the late hall-of-fame champion
Named: Louisville senior John Murphy, as winner of the Byron Nelson Award, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced Thursday in a news release. The honor goes to a graduating senior whose collegiate academic record, golf accomplishments, character, integrity and citizenship reflect the late Byron Nelson, a World Golf Hall of Fame member who won 52 times on the PGA Tour before retiring at age 34. Murphy, of Kinsale, Ireland, posted a career scoring average of 71.98 and won twice this season before the spring semester was abruptly halted because of the coronavirus pandemic. He volunteered in Louisville, Ky., at a food center, with adult wheelchair basketball, at a recreation center and the local Salvation Army, according to the GCAA.
