British men’s and women’s amateur championships bumped by 2 months as R&A adjusts calendar because of coronavirus concerns
Delayed: By the R&A, the start of its 2020 summer amateur schedule until mid-August because of the coronavirus pandemic, organizers announced Thursday. Notably, the R&A’s two main amateur events have been moved from June to late August. The British Amateur, which had been set for June 15-20, will be played Aug. 25-30 at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England. The British Women’s Amateur, originally scheduled for June 23-27, will be played Aug. 25-29 at Kilmarnock (Scotland) Golf Club’s Barassie course. The British Senior Amateur has been rescheduled from July 29-31 to Sept. 23-25 at Royal Cinque Ports in Deal, England. The R&A Junior Open has been canceled. The R&A’s other events will be played as scheduled, beginning with the British girls’ and boys’ championships on Aug. 11-15. Earlier, the R&A postponed the Curtis Cup women’s amateur matches until 2021, and all other international matches that had been scheduled for this year were canceled. Last month, the R&A scrapped its British Open, the only one of the men's four major championships to be canceled this year.
