After being pushed back because of coronavirus pandemic, Summer Olympics will be held July 23-Aug. 8 next year
Rescheduled: The Olympic Games in Tokyo, for July 23-Aug. 8, 2021, the International Olympic Committee and Japanese organizers announced Monday. The Tokyo Games had been postponed March 24 under pressure worldwide from participating nations that claimed the coronavirus pandemic was limiting their athletes’ ability to train. The new dates will fall during the same calendar week in which the 2020 Games had been scheduled. “The new dates, exactly one year after those originally planned for 2020, also have the added benefit that any disruption that the postponement will cause to the international sports calendar can be kept to a minimum,” the IOC said in its statement. “Additionally, they will provide sufficient time to finish the qualification process. The same heat mitigation measures as planned for 2020 will be implemented.” Golf returned to the Olympics for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games after a 112-year absence. Olympic golf was scheduled to be played at Kasumigaseki Country Club near Tokyo. The Paralympics for disabled athletes will be held Aug. 24-Sept. 5.
