U.S. Open will be postponed, N.Y. Post reports

Winged Foot Golf Club, near N.Y. hotspot for coronavirus, will retain host duties, newspaper says; USGA says no decision has been made

Reported: By the New York Post’s Mark Cannizzaro, that the U.S. Open will be postponed until an undetermined summer date. The Open, scheduled for June 18-21 at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., is in Westchester County, near the state’s epicenter for the coronavirus outbreak. In his report, Cannizzaro cited sources with knowledge of the USGA’s plans. A USGA spokeswoman would say only that no decision about the Open has been reached and that an announcement would be made by mid-April. If affected, the Open would be the third men’s major championship to be postponed this season, after the Masters and PGA Championship were delayed by Augusta National (Ga.) Golf Club and the PGA of America, respectively. Because of the pandemic, the PGA Tour schedule has been put on hold until at least late May, with 11 tournaments postponed or canceled.
