$200 and a dream: USGA sets Open qualifying

109 sites in 45 states and Canada will welcome would-be local qualifiers on 1st step toward a spot in U.S. Open at Winged Foot

Announced: By the USGA, 18-hole local-qualifying sites for the 120th U.S. Open that will be played June 18-21 at Winged Foot Golf Club’s West Course in Mamaroneck, N.Y. The 109 sites in 45 states and Canada will host play April 27-May 12. Competitors who advance out of local qualifying will play 36-hole sectional qualifiers at one of 12 sites – nine in the U.S. and one each in Canada, England and Japan – on May 18-June 8. To be eligible, a player must have a handicap of 1.4 or better or be a professional. The cost is $200. Online registration begins in early March. Last year, 17 players advanced through local and sectional qualifying to the 156-player U.S. Open at Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links. Of those 17, four made the 36-hole cut. Ken Venturi (1964) and Orville Moody (1969) are the only players to win the U.S. Open after advancing through local qualifying.
