Report: LPGA cancels China event, citing coronavirus

Golfweek says widening epidemic on Chinese mainland prompts LPGA to scrub March 5-8 Blue Bay LPGA on Hainan Island

Canceled: The Blue Bay LPGA tournament on China’s Hainan Island because of concerns about the widening coronavirus epidemic, Golfweek’s Beth Ann Nichols reported, citing multiple people with direct knowledge of the situation. The March 5-8 tournament would have been the third and final stop on the LPGA’s three-event Asia Swing. Now, the tour will have two open weeks between the HSBC Women’s World Championship, which ends March 1 in Singapore, and the Founders Cup on March 19-22 in Phoenix. The coronavirus has killed at least 133 and infected 7,700 on the Chinese mainland. In the U.S. as of Wednesday evening, five cases had been confirmed in four states and another 165 patients were suspected of being infected. Officials were scrambling to transfer Americans from ground zero of the outbreak, in Wuhan, China, and have them quarantined upon repatriation.
