Rory McIlroy will start year at Torrey Pines

Reigning FedEx Cup champion and player of the year ranks No. 2 in world

Announced: By the Farmers Insurance Open, that Rory McIlroy will begin his year at the PGA Tour event in two weeks at Torrey Pines in San Diego. McIlroy, 30, a four-time major champion from Northern Ireland, is No. 2 in the Official World Golf Ranking. He finished fourth or better in his last three starts in 2019, including a victory at the WGC HSBC Champions in Shanghai in November. McIlroy won four times worldwide in 2019, including the Tour Championship, en route to winning the FedEx Cup season title and being named the PGA Tour's player of the year. However, he has not won a major title since claiming the 2014 PGA Championship. McIlroy tied for fifth last year in his debut at Torrey Pines. The Farmers Insurance Open will be played Jan. 23-26.
