Reversed: A decision to abandon his European Tour membership, Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, who had said in November that he would focus on the PGA Tour. McIlroy, 30, a four-time major champion, had become the face of the European Tour in recent years. A decision to relinquish tour membership could have affected his chances for a future Ryder Cup captaincy. According to newspaper reports in Ireland and the United Kingdom, McIlroy relented and filed for membership before the May 1 deadline. In nine starts this season, all on the PGA Tour, McIlroy has posted eight top-10 results, including a victory in the Players Championship. He likely will not make his European debut until the Scottish Open, which will be played the week before the British Open visits Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. McIlroy reportedly will not play the Irish Open, a tournament that he has hosted in the past.
