The Tiger hype machine
Here we go again. The media can’t wait to crown Tiger Woods. Crown him a PGA Tour winner. State in a serious tone that he may surpass the majors record of Jack Nicklaus. Add him to the Ryder Cup team (“Tiger 3.0: Let the mania begin again,” May 14).
Based on what? On barely making the cut (and not through his own efforts) at the Players Championship, and two good rounds at what clearly has become a very gettable venue?
The hype clearly has intensified. Let’s label it Tiger Overhype 3.0.
Golf’s next commercial darling?
With his victory at the Players Championship, Webb Simpson now leads Rickie Fowler, 5-4, in victories on the PGA Tour, 1-0 in majors and is tied 1-1 in the Players. Yet every tournament in which Fowler competes, he is one of the pre-tournament favorites. Why?
Maybe Simpson will get to do loan commercials and insurance commercials. Or maybe Golf Channel will give him a TV series.
Not a chance.
An unfortunate pairing
A tip of the hat to Alex Miceli for correctly pointing out that the pairing this past weekend involving Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler was all about “entertainment” (“McIlroy’s candor counters Woods’ illusions,” May 9).
Maybe Miceli will be willing to go to bat in the future for the poor guy who got lumped in with those two choppers. Their shoddy play obviously had a negative effect on said golfer, who might’ve won the tournament going away had he been placed with some actual contenders for the opening two rounds.

Suggestions to toughen Stadium Course
I agree with Greg Tatoian that TPC Sawgrass’ Stadium Course is too easy, especially when it isn’t windy (“From the Morning Read inbox,” May 14).
It wouldn’t be very difficult to make the course harder. The rough could be more penal. But I think the most sensible change would be to make the course a par 70; the par 5s are generally too short. Make two of them into long par 4s.
The beer’s on Kavanagh*
Have some respect, Mr. Tatoian (“From the Morning Read inbox,” May 14). If you can score in double digits on the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course from the forward tees (all 18 holes), I'll buy you two beers during happy hour in the clubhouse.
March will bring back the north wind.
