Number of top-10 finishes, in six starts, since Australia’s Jason Day hired caddie Steve Williams out of retirement. Day and Williams have split up in “a mutual decision,” Day said in a report by the Australian Associated Press. Day, 31, a former No. 1-ranked player in the world, missed the cut at the recent Northern Trust playoff event. Williams, 55, of New Zealand, was on the bag with Tiger Woods for 13 of his 15 major-championship victories, and he caddied for Adam Scott when the Aussie won the 2013 Masters. Day called it “a disconnect of old school and new school.” Day enters this week’s BMW Championship at No. 50 in the FedEx Cup season points standings. Only the top 30 in the standings will advance to next week’s season-ending Tour Championship.
Position in the Official World Golf Ranking for American Patrick Reed, who improved nine spots after winning the Northern Trust, the PGA Tour’s first of three playoff events. With the victory, Reed also jumped 48 spots, to No. 2, in the FedEx Cup season points standings entering this week’s BMW Championship, which begins Thursday at Medinah (Ill.) No. 3 Course (tee times).
